PTSD has been found to be associated with numerous different physical health problems such as heart, respiratory, digestive, and reproductory problems and disease. In addition, PTSD has also been found to be related to autoimmune diseases such as arthritis and diabetes. PTSD and Diabetes Studies have found that individuals with PTSD are more likely to have diabetes. The unhealthy behaviors often associated with PTSD (for example, smoking, substance use, poor eating habits) may place a person at risk for  developing diabetes. Among people with diabetes, the PTSD-related stress  and unhealthy behaviors may negatively impact the course of a persons diabetes. Specific Health Problems Among People With PTSD and Diabetes Researchers at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University and the VA Medical Center in Syracuse, New York, examined the specific health-related problems among people with both PTSD and diabetes. They identified 14,795 military veterans with diabetes and looked at whether or not the veterans had PTSD, depression, or other psychiatric diagnoses. Participants were divided into four groups: people with depression and PTSD, people with PTSD but not depression, people with depression but not PTSD, people with other psychiatric diagnoses besides PTSD and depression, and people without any psychiatric diagnoses. Across these different groups, they then examined differences on a number of different health-related factors, such as glycemic control, cholesterol levels (total cholesterol, LDL, and HDL), triglycerides, weight, body mass index (BMI). The researchers found that compared to other groups, people with both PTSD and depression: had worse total cholesterol levels and LDLhad higher triglyceride levelsweighed morehad a higher BMI In regard to glycemic control, however, people with only depression had poorer glycemic control than people with PTSD or both PTSD and depression. Improving Your Physical and Mental Health PTSD and related conditions such as depression can have a major impact on a persons health, and people with a pre-existing medical condition such as diabetes, who have PTSD and/or depression, may be particularly at risk for health problems. Culture risen from high crime rates, Redding, California is persistent in looking for ways to cultivate a new attitude (Hess). During the summer of 2016, an independent film company based in the Los Angeles area, Archetype Pictures, moved their crew up to Northern California in order to give Redding a taste of artisanal life. Here, people from the community were brought in as producers, actors, and crew to help create science-fiction film, Interpreters. As a member of the City of Redding, as well as a film student in the surround area looking for experience, I was hired onto the crew as the art director. Included in this document will be photographic examples of the work, along with the following description of my personal responsibilities†¦show more content†¦This meant understanding the characters themselves, finding photos of the actors to print out and put on refrigerators, and even painting on canvas, for a character who was an artist. Going through this process require d taking photos of all the sets before and after being dressed, as many locations were shot in places of work or homes donated by the Redding community for the time being. Photos provided continuity for locations we had to shoot at again on a later date, as well as ensuring everything was back in its place for those who shared their homes and businesses with Archetype Pictures. Though these were the main tasks, the job aided in my understanding of working on a real film set in various ways, some expected and others less so. The beginnings of the art director job entailed the fairly obvious step for filmmakers just starting up: networking. Through family members and mutual friends, I was able to get in touch with one of the producers of the film who spoke with me about what experiences I’d had with film already, the available job, and the duties along with it. Often, the diagnosis is made during the first or second year of the childs life when failure to gain weight and changes in skin become evident. HGPS is well-known for its progeroid symptoms and for the restrictions that it places on lifespan. However, since it also involves a number of symptoms absent in normal aging, HGPS is considered as a segmental progeria instead of a true disease of accelerated aging (Lewis). Symptoms involving the cartilage and bone systems include abnormal bone development and dysplasia; hypoclastic facial bones; stiff joints with contractures in the phlanges, long bones, thorax, and the skull; and thin cranial bones. Symptoms involving the cardiovascular system include atherosclerosis of the small and large arteries; severe depletion, attenuation, or change of shape in vascular smooth muscles; and myocardial fibrosis, calcification of the mitral valve leaflets and prominent veins often with easy bruising (Lewis). Symptoms involving the metabolic system include failure to thrive and progressive loss of subcutaneous fat and weight and height below the third percentile. As for the skin symptoms, HGPS patients have thickened, hyalinized skin taut in most places, but loose on fingers and toes; eccrine and sebaceous glands may be severely reduced in numbers; and scleroderma usually beginning on lower abdomen, proximal limbs and buttocks. The nails of the HGPS sufferers are usually thin, small and dystrophic, but may also be thick. Their hairs have a plucked bird appearance with scalp hair progressively diminishing to a few remaining blonde or white, fuzzy, fine, and brittle hairs. Their eye brows and lashes are often lost (Lewis). There is currently no effective therapy available for the treatment of HGPS. However, there are many ways to offset the diseases brought about by HGPS. Vigilant monitoring for cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disease is necessary. Physicians recommend the use of low-dose aspirin as prophylaxis against such disease. Also, occupational and physical therapy can help HGPS patients to sustain an active lifestyle and physical activities. Hydrotherapy may be effective in minimizing arthritis symptoms and in improving joint mobility. In vitro studies are looking for a possible role of farnesyltransferase inhibitors (FTIs) in progeria. Studies are exploring the role of FTIs in promoting the release of the mutant prelamin A from the nuclear membrane. It appears that FTIs allow it to be properly integrated into the nuclear lamina, hence correcting the functional and structural nuclear defects. Furthermore, initial in vitro investigations that use transfection of modified oligonucleotides targeting the cryptic splice site have yielded positive results. The elimination of the making of the mutant LMNA mRNA restores normal nuclear morphology, resulting in the normalization of gene expression and heterochromatin structure.
